Ahmed Sofa (30 June 1943 - 28 July 2001) was a Bangladeshi poet, novelist, writer, critic, translator and public intellectual. He wrote novels, poetry and non-fiction essays. Sofa helped establishing Bangladesh Lekhak Shibir (Bangladesh Writers' Camp) in 1970 to "organise liberal writers in order to further the cause of the progressive movement".

Early life

Sofa was born at Gachbaria in Chittagong district. He received his secondary and higher secondary education in Chittagong. He earned his master's in political science from the University of Dhaka. He started writing in the 1960's through stories, novels, poems, essays, critical works, translations, juvenile literature, and compositions. He moved to Dhaka in 1962. In 1976, he worked on his doctoral dissertation, under the supervision of his supervisor Abdur Razzaq, on the growth of a middle class among the Bengali Muslims.

Career

Sofa published his first novel Surja Tumi Sathi in 1967. He promoted the works of new writers. In 1972, he helped publishing Nondito Noroke, the first novel by Humayun Ahmed.

In 1975, Sofa published two volumes namely Jallad Somoi (Time, the Hangman) and Dukkher Diner Doha (Dog Day Songs).

Sofa translated Goethe's Faust (part one).

Death and legacy

Sofa died of cardiac arrest on 28 July 2001 in a hospital in Dhaka. He was buried in Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard.

"Ahmed Sofa Rastroshobha" along with Centre for Asian Art and Culture organize the Ahmed Sofa Memorial Lecture at the University of Dhaka.
